Nightlife, eating out and solidarity during the lockdown
26 March 2020 19:30 - 20:15
A virtual panel discussion about the impact of Covid-19 on Rotterdam's nightlife, and the threat to restaurants, caterers, clubs, bars, live music and other entertainment venues. In this second edition of Thursday Night Live! online, local experts affected by the coronavirus crisis will discuss their current predicament, how they see the future of their professions, and how consumers and fans can contribute to the survival of the scene. With contributions from Stephanie Afrifa, Manuela Gonçalves Tavares, Philip Powel and Frank Stok.
The first online edition of Thursday Night Live!, organised in response to the coronavirus measures, dealt with dance, theatre, poetry, the visual arts and journalism. But nightlife and eating out are also important aspects of Rotterdam's social and cultural life. The second edition deals with threats to these other spaces, designed specifically for social gatherings. Manuela Gonçalves Tavares (COCO), Philip Powel (BIRD) and DJ and artist Frank 'Franky Sticks' Stok will debate these urgent issues, with moderator Stephanie Afrifa.
How are restaurants, clubs and bars coping, now that all social gatherings are forbidden? Will restaurateurs and DJs be able to keep their heads above water through home deliveries and live streaming? What are the effects on people's mental health? And what does the future hold?
This event is part of a new series of online Thursday Night Live! programmes. Despite the institute's necessary temporary closure, our programming continues: from the privileged position of cultural professionals with ongoing salary payments and access to budgets during this crisis, we are looking for alternative ways to keep Rotterdam's cultural life up and running.
Following the online round-table discussion, we invite you to tune into another broadcast: in line with the theme of the discussion, DJ Mo Jakob will play live for an hour on his own channel!
