The Unusual in the Everyday

During the week of 6 to 11 July 2020, Het Nieuwe Instituut is celebrating the opening of two exhibitions, Atelier Nelly & Theo van Doesburg and Gijs Bakker & K. Schippers: Basics, with a series of events. Most can be followed via Het Nieuwe Instituut Online.
The Unusual in the Everyday celebrates the opening of two exhibitions. Atelier Nelly and Theo van Doesburg offers an alternative view of the work of Nelly and Theo van Doesburg, partly thanks to the recent restoration and digitisation of Van Doesburg's architecture archive. Nelly emerges a key figure in the creation of the reputation of Theo Van Doesburg and De Stijl. Their most distinctive project plays a central role in the exhibition: the studio house in Meudon, a suburb of Paris.
Gijs Bakker & K. Schippers: Basics, is a presentation in Sonneveld House for which Gijs Bakker and K. Schippers combine jewellery and poems that they have selected especially for this occasion from their extensive oeuvres. This creates an atmosphere in which visitors can make new connections and alternative interpretations are given space.
The opening programme is under development: additional events will be announced.

Jewellery as Poetry, Poetry as Jewellery
Create jewellery and poetry as you explore the relationship between the two in this combined workshop by goldsmith Nastasia Gendreau and poet Dean Bowen. During the workshop, you’ll dive into the stories behind the materials. What are the materials saying? Where do their stories meet your own? And how to translate all of this into a poem or a piece of jewellery?
